I submit that in order to make school more relevant to its students that a consumer course must be made mandatory.. So much of a school curriculum is devoted to courses that may not have any direct benefit to a child. It may be great to learn about ancient Greek culture, and find out about the geological configuration of Yellowstone Park, but are those lessons more valuable than learning how to purchase a quality product like an automobile or a home. These considerations are more relevant to children today. An strong argument can be made to focus on “real world” concerns like the aforementioned than concentrating on subject matter than will have little impact on one’s life.

School simply has to be more practical and relevant in its instruction than it traditionally has been. if the goal of our educational system is to provide children with the skill that hey will need to survive and become worthwhile citizens in the community., wouldn’t it be prudent to provide them with the skills needed to become discerning consumers. That skill set is more pragmatic and useful than a working knowledge of Shakespeare’s sonnets.

Education, at the very least, should be more practical to children than it is, and teaching children how to become effective consumers should be a paramount goal of educators. A knowledgeable consumer can change the way goods and services are deliverers to the public. If something is deemed substandard by consumers, it will no longer be offered. A lack of consumption will see to that. So, emphasis on how an item’s quality can be determined is important to know. It should be noted, that school should not endorse one product or service over another, but it should arm the student with the knowledge to make his own decision. This can be accomplished by informing students of what constitutes healthy ingredients in food products and quality, long lasting, materials in manufactured goods.

So, lets encourage schools to include a consumer course in its curriculum. This is relevant and practical

Is a college education really needed today to find employment success? There is growing concern about how effective a college degree is. According to a recent John Stossel program questioning the value of a college degree, 17% of bartenders are college graduates and 16% of bellhops have college degrees. Did these people need a college degree to secure a job in these professions. I want to make something abundantly clear here, this is in no way an attempt to disparage anyone performing their jobs in these profession or any others. However, there seems to be a growing population of college graduates out there who cant get a job in their chosen college course of education. They are taking employment where they can find it, regardless of whether it is in their area of concentration in college. The harsh reality of life after the cloistered existence in academia hits these young people hard after spending four to five in college to secure a degree that doesn’t translate into employment. Oftentimes, these young people leave school burdened with huge college loans and with no job to pay that obligation down.

Make no mistake, the task of gaining a college degree is a significant accomplishment. It takes years of commitment and long hours of dedicated attention and focus. Then shouldn’t the degree lend itself to gainful employment? Sadly, this isn’t always the case. I guess the most important consideration when choosing this course of action is picking a degree program that will translate into employment. One needs a consular to help choose an avenue of course concentration. This should not be minimized. That can be a person’s most important decision. Generally speaking, technical areas of college concentration make for quicker employment. Curriculum involving engineering, science, math, nursing, pharmacy are more marketable when seeking employment than degrees in liberal arts. So, if you have an adaptability in these areas, it would behoove you to follow that if you want to go to college. One point that should not be ignored here, is an individual’s motivation. College educated people earn more, on average, than their counterparts. However, it can be argued that these people are self starters and highly driven to succeed anyway. Even if they eschewed college, they would be successful in whatever employment avenue they chose. As my life has progressed, I have given increasing credence to the old maxim that “A” students are bank tellers, “B” students are bank managers and “C” students own the bank. Life is not always about what you know. It’s more important to apply what you know to the marketplace. Motivation, passion, attention to detail, focus, staying on task are attributes that , applied to the marketplace, will serve a person much better than some obscure degree from an expensive obscure college. College degrees are expensive and can delay a person’s real calling. One doesn’t learn motivation, he either has it or he doesn’t. You do to need a college degree for that.
