Harsh economic times can actually be a good thing. Heresy you say! How can this be? You have to be crazy! Harsh times can make us stronger, and more disciplined. Simply because we HAVE TO be in order to survive. The law of the jungle where only the strong, cunning, and adaptable will survive can be applied to the economic reality of these current times. Only the strong will survive. That means adapting to the circumstances we are currently in. Tightening one’s belt when it comes to expenditures is always difficult, and, quite frankly, if your economic situation is stable, you aren’t so quick to change your spending habits. However, the necessity of dealing with a job loss or reduction in pay will drive us into being that frugal person we have to be. The trick here is to take these lessons and carry them with you the rest of your life.
There is an old adage that states, and I paraphrase, it is not how much you make, it is, rather, how much you keep. Ever wonder why some people can live better with less of an income than others? The answer is simple. Those people have disciplined themselves into living below their needs. When one can accomplish this, then one can be on their way to financial independence.

There really can be a silver lining to this economic cloud we are living through right now. If one can learn the principles of frugality, then it will him him well when better times return. It is said that adversity brings out the best us. Look on the bright side, it follows, that we will all be better for this.

Do loyalty programs associated with credit cards really work? I guess the answer to that question is what type credit card you use and whether you travel much. Because, in has been my experience, that the best use of a reward program is for airplane travel. Money back or gift cards for goods and services associated with most credit cards are often very restrictive and therefore, unattainable. If you pay attention, after you have joined a loyalty program, and participate in all the promotions and use the card religiously, you will be surprised how quickly a free airline ticket can be attained.
A great card that I use is the Southwest Rapid Rewards card. It has annual fee of $59. However, a fee based card allows for you to accumulate points much more quickly and are much less restrictive when redeeming rewards. Oftentimes, these cards heap additional bonus points at the anniversary of your renewal. This allows you to pay for the card fee through the accumulation of these additional bonus points.

I know some people want to freelance and use a multitude of cards. However, this practice only lengthens the amount of time it takes for a person to start using their points . My suggestion is to stick with one card and use it exclusively until your desired point total is achieved. Then, and only then, should you move on to another.

Also, it is very important to check the rules for point expiration. Many cards have point expiration dates, and the worst thing that can happen, when striving for a desired point total, is to have accumulated points no longer be valid.
Credit card usage is a multi-billion dollar business, and, therefore, the competition for your business is fierce. Take advantage of that and chose wisely. Here is the card that I have used and would recommend. Notice that it has an annual fee. Believe me, this fee pales in comparison to the rewards delivered. The Southwest Airline Rapid Reward Card, $59 annual fee with bonus points at anniversary for renewal is the best. The first usage of the card allows you a free flight anywhere in the U.S. The business card has a fee of $99 but allows for two free flights upon acceptance. These cards are liberal in their point accumulation, the points do not expire and they do to have any blackout dates. Most of my domestic flights are now free because of my use of this little gem, and we all know how expensive flying can be. When The burden of paying for a flight is lifted, the doors open up for many exciting and interesting destinations. So, if you use a credit card, then, let it work for you
