Direct Deposit: Cover your bases Tell a Friend

One of the most convenient, and popular ways to deposit your pay check is available at almost every single work place in the country. Of course what I am referring to is Direct Deposit. Direct Deposit is great, and it’s very popular, but there are some things that people should be aware of before using it. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t trust your bank and that you shouldn’t use Direct Deposit, but instead you should make sure that your employer and you have a good relationship.

The reality is that with Direct Deposit your check is non-negotiable, and that means that if there’s something wrong with your hours or if there is a dispute over your hours; there’s really nothing that can be done. The reason being is that this check being automatically deposited cannot be reissued or changed once it has gone through the system and into your bank account. Thus, it’s important that if you’re an hourly employee, you should keep track of your hours, and save all time sheets and necessary information.

Now, these problems are not necessarily a sign of an employer’s true intention, but they are a result of human error or a time clock issue. Still, if they happen repeatedly, you probably should consider getting a new job, or eliminating Direct Deposit from your check, so you can dispute your check before it’s been cashed or deposited. Yet, another important thing with Direct Deposit is the form that you have to give to your employer. If you have decided to have your check deposited via Direct Deposit, make sure you give the form to your employer right away, and whatever you do DON’T FORGET ABOUT IT!!! Don’t leave the form in your car face up, because anyone can walk by and literally see a sample check with all your banking information on it, and depending upon your bank, they may also be able to see your bank account information as well.

Thus, the reality is that Direct Deposit can be an easier way to avoid a line at the bank, but maybe it’s better to wait and deposit it yourself. Of course there are many factors that come into play, but when it comes to Direct Deposit, just remember if you’re going to do it, do it right away, and know who you are dealing with.
